Having just read the guide "Sky Cards Do Not Work" I can tell you that i have changed cards around all the boxes in my house and brought cards from ebay, they work fine!
You can't register them under your name and sky have the right to cancel them if they want but its unlikely in my experience
You can not upgrade the card and start using it to receive subscriptions.
However they are ideal for 2nd boxes in the house if you don't want to pay sky every monthand you just want the basic free channels. Think of it as Free View but though sky.
The only reason to buy a card from ebay would be if you don't live in the UK, for uk residents just get one from sky, 20 one off payment if you have the box and dish or 150 if you need all the equipment.
The cards from sky can be upgraded to subscription cards and will never be cancelled by sky.
